The story

The track opens low, almost below hearing, a sub-bass that just sits there like water pressing against glass. Above it, a bowed cello drone hums in F# minor, thin and cold. A distant bell tolls once, decayed and detuned, like it rang somewhere behind a wall of ice. Nothing rushes. The first minute is about weight, not motion.

Around the second section the liquid DnB bass starts rolling underneath, warm and round, half-time so it feels more like a heartbeat than a beat. A vocoded gregorian voice drifts in far back in the mix, muted under a filter that keeps every high end blunted, like sound traveling through deep water. Sonar pings mark time quietly, low pulses instead of clicks.

The middle stretch is where it opens up. The sub-bass drops hit on the downbeats, massive but soft-edged, more felt in the chest than heard. Tape echo smears the bell tones into long trailing sweeps, and the cello drone thickens, doubling itself. The lead phrase, when it finally surfaces, is slow and expressive, almost vocal, carried by a warm synth tone that never gets bright.

By the final minute everything starts to recede the way it arrived. The bass thins out, the choir fades further back, and the bell tolls one last time before the reverb tail swallows it. What's left is the sub, the crackle, and a long cathedral hush that doesn't so much end as sink out of range.

Play this at 2am with the lights off, during a long solo drive through empty streets, in a flotation tank or bath, or as background pressure while writing something heavy.
