The story
Glass Machinery runs at 94 BPM in B minor, three unusual voices sharing the melodic duties throughout: a glass armonica singing in pure, ringing tones, a prepared piano answering with muted metallic plinks, and an e-bow guitar holding endless sustained notes underneath both. A low reese bass and a soft sidechained pulse keep the whole arrangement gently moving forward.
None of the three lead voices behaves conventionally, the glass armonica's ethereal ring, the prepared piano's dampened clank, and the e-bow's unbroken sustain each contributing a texture rarely heard together in one arrangement. The first swell gathers all three into one shimmering combined mass before the piece collapses back to the prepared piano alone, dry and genuinely strange in isolation.
An extended mid-section introduces a second theme where the glass armonica and the e-bow guitar move in contrary motion, pulling apart rather than reinforcing each other above the prepared piano. The second swell rises far beyond the first in scale, all three unusual voices converging once more before a reprise and a slow outro fade close the strange piece down.
An unusual instrumental showcase, astral meditation sessions, a strange dreamlike visual piece, or late-night experimental listening.
