The story

Ink and Mazut is fully instrumental, built around a single violin motif that never repeats the same way twice. At 93 BPM the drums sit half-time and dusty, boom-bap in feel with warm vinyl crackle layered underneath, while a fretless bass rounds out the low end without ever pushing into distortion. Alphorn and vocoded chant textures drift in from the edges, more atmosphere than melody, filtered and distant.

The violin carries the actual narrative, its valley-shaped contour returning transformed in each new section, sometimes doubled, sometimes chopped and screwed into something closer to a vocal smear. A baroque minor ground-bass holds the harmony steady underneath these variations, and dub-chord stabs punctuate the space between phrases without ever crowding the lead.

Partway through, the track drops into a false ending: a full silence pit, drums and bass gone, before a driving surge pulls everything back in at once. It is the sharpest turn in an otherwise patient arrangement, and it resets the energy for the final pass of the violin theme before the track fades out clean and instrumental to the last bar, the ground-bass the only thing left standing.

Rainy-window commutes, instrumental beat tapes, film noir edits, or background for late writing sessions that need a pulse without lyrics.
