Someone strung paper lanterns along the roadside years ago, and no one remembers who keeps lighting them. They hang between fence posts on the edge of the fields, each one a small warm planet swaying in the night wind. The air smells of dust and cooling asphalt. Cars are rare out here; when one passes, the lanterns lean after it, then settle back into their slow orbit.
