The story
Ascension shares its structure with a companion piece, running at 104 BPM in F# minor, noir and wide, gated 80s drums keeping a steady pulse beneath a soaring lead guitar and a Juno pad. A round moog bass fills the low end, the whole arrangement carrying that same nocturnal, unhurried forward motion rather than aiming for a sudden climax right away.
The main theme is again hinted at twice before arriving in full, each pass bringing the guitar phrase closer without quite completing it, the withholding making the eventual full statement land with real weight. Once delivered, the theme returns reharmonized a fourth higher, the same phrase reaching into a noticeably brighter register than its first appearance.
One long stripped passage near the middle removes the guitar almost entirely, leaving only sub and a distant pulse for an extended stretch before the full arrangement returns. The gated drums keep the ascension moving even through that emptiness, carrying the piece all the way to its wide, reharmonized close near the very top of the darkened midnight sky.
