The story
The track opens low, almost underground: a sub-bass hum sits beneath 30 to 60 Hz and never really leaves, a constant pressure more felt than heard. Over it, mellotron choir fades in like breath fogging a window, soft-edged and slightly worn at the corners, as if the tape itself remembers older takes.
Contrabassoon enters next, dark and rounded, walking under the choir in long tied notes rather than a melody. It doesn't lead so much as anchor, giving the upper textures somewhere to rest. A talkbox voice threads through occasionally, muted and vowel-soft, less a lyric than a murmured aside mixed low, like someone thinking out loud in another room.
Midway through, shakuhachi breaks the stillness with breathy, unhurried phrases, each one trailing off before it resolves. The drums stay minimal throughout, soft-attack and rounded, felt more as a slow pulse than a beat, never pushing the tempo past its own weariness.
By the close, the layers thin out one at a time, choir first, then bassoon, until only the sub-bass hum and a last shakuhachi breath remain, fading the way a room goes quiet after everyone has left.
