Which license a café, shop or hotel needs

AUTODIA issues public performance licences for the repertoire it represents and, jointly with the other music authors' society, extended collective licences. GEA is the joint collection body for producers (GRAMMO), singers (ERATO) and musicians (APOLLON), and licenses businesses for public performance.

OPI, the Hellenic Copyright Organisation, supervises the societies and lists their tariffs, licences and infringement decisions.

How the fee is worked out

AUTODIA and GEA publish general tariffs; AUTODIA has a 2026 edition. OPI publishes society tariffs. The calculation basis was not verified for this guide, so no example fee is given.

Can I play Spotify or YouTube in my business?

Consumer plans of Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube are licensed for personal, noncommercial use under their own terms, so a private account is not a license to play music to customers. No local society statement on streaming apps was found.

Music outside the collecting societies

Authors' side: AUTODIA states that its extended collective licences (Law 4481/2017 article 7A, added by Law 4996/2022) cover all music right holders for use in Greece who did not assign rights to either society, unless they file an opt out declaration. The opt out takes effect 3 months after it is sent to both societies.

So music by non members is presumptively inside the extended licence unless its authors opted out. A venue relying on royalty free music should hold evidence of the opt out or of the authors' direct licence.

Related rights: the equitable remuneration of performers and producers is commonly described as under mandatory collective management (Law 2121/1993 article 49), collected via GEA; the article text was not verified again for this guide.

OPI's FAQ cites criminal penalties of 1 to 10 years' imprisonment and fines of EUR 2,900 to 59,000, and civil compensation of at least twice the normal fee.

Dr.DIO in Greece

Dr.DIO Studio makes its own electronic and ambient music, no Dr.DIO track is registered with any collecting society, and the Business plan ($14.99 a month per venue, 14 days free) gives the venue a direct public playback license and a certificate for Dr.DIO music.

In Greece the authors' extended licence covers non members unless they opted out, and the recordings remuneration is commonly described as collected only via GEA, so Dr.DIO music may still be claimed on both sides. Ask AUTODIA and GEA in writing, with the Dr.DIO certificate, before you decide.

Any other music in the venue, such as radio, TV, live music or other playlists, still needs the usual licences.
