Which license a café, shop or hotel needs
Artisjus, with MAHASZ and EJI, licenses background live or recorded music in hospitality venues; shops and accommodation have separate pages. The tariff is published every year in the Hivatalos Értesítő and approved by the Minister of Justice.
How the fee is worked out
Hospitality fees depend on the settlement (Budapest or elsewhere) and the opening hours category. The 2026 tariffs rose 3.7%, in line with 2024 inflation. There is a discount when a professional background music provider supplies the music.
No example amount is given, because the time unit of the published figures could not be verified.
Can I play Spotify or YouTube in my business?
Consumer plans of Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube are licensed for personal, noncommercial use under their own terms, so a private account is not a license to play music to customers. The Artisjus pages read do not comment on streaming.
Music outside the collecting societies
Section 25(1) of the Hungarian Copyright Act (Szjt.) gives the society the right to contract for public performance of published non stage musical works unless the author has filed an opt out declaration (extended collective management with author opt out).
Section 77(1) makes the user owe remuneration for public communication of commercial phonograms, split half and half between producer and performer, and section 77(3) says rightholders assert this claim through their collecting societies. So a venue relying on non represented music needs evidence that the authors opted out or are not covered, and the section 77 remuneration may still be claimed by EJI and MAHASZ for commercial recordings.
Penalties were not documented in the sources read.
Dr.DIO in Hungary
Dr.DIO Studio makes its own electronic and ambient music, no Dr.DIO track is registered with any collecting society, and the Business plan ($14.99 a month per venue, 14 days free) gives the venue a direct public playback license and a certificate for Dr.DIO music.
In Hungary the authors' side is extended collective with opt out, and the remuneration for commercial phonograms is asserted through the societies, so EJI and MAHASZ may still claim for Dr.DIO recordings. Ask Artisjus in writing, with the Dr.DIO certificate, before you decide.
Any other music in the venue, such as radio, TV, live music or other playlists, still needs the usual licences.
