The story
The track opens as a drone meditation, dominant sub-bass and warm string-machine pads filling the room before any lead enters, the mood hesitant rather than declarative. Cascading analog sequencer arpeggios build the backbone as the piece deepens, and a brass-like analog lead eventually states its falling-then-rising motif in Bb minor pentatonic, tentative at first.
Fretless bass glides beneath the arpeggios with a warm, mwah-toned line, and gated toms mark quiet transitions rather than driving the tempo. A dictaphone tape-loop echoes fragments of the lead motif like a half-lit thought returning, sparse radiophonic FX sweeps drifting past without ever settling into a fixed pattern.
Erhu and morin khuur add brief, aching countermelodies in the later stretch, a shoegaze wall of guitar swelling in behind them before pulling back again. Glass harmonica catches the light at the piece's most open moment, but the luminous release stays incomplete, the wick glowing rather than fully catching as the track settles back into its opening drone.
For an unfinished project left open overnight, hesitant late-night thinking, a slow wind-down, or quiet uncertainty.
