Instagram and Facebook music rules for creators and businesses

Meta's Music Guidelines (effective 26 March 2024) make users responsible for the music in their content and prohibit commercial or non personal use of music without the right licenses.

What Meta's Music Guidelines say

The guidelines themselves authorize no music use. Using music for commercial or non personal purposes is prohibited without appropriate licenses; being eligible for Music Revenue Sharing does not by itself make a video commercial.

Content with more recorded music is more likely to be limited. Meta advises shorter clips and a visual component, so that recorded audio is not the main purpose. Creating a music listening experience, including in live video, can get content blocked and the page, profile or group deleted. Music may be unavailable or not allowed in some countries.

When a video is muted or blocked

Rights owners can review content with unlicensed music, which may be blocked, muted or removed, sometimes only in some regions.

You can dispute a restriction from the notification. Outcomes include contacting the rights holder, automatic restoration, or review by Meta's operations team.

Business accounts and the Sound Collection

Meta runs a Sound Collection of free music and sound effects. Its license terms (commercial use, ads, use off the platform) could not be read for this guide.

Reports widely say that business or professional accounts on Instagram and Facebook get a reduced, commercially cleared music library in Reels and Stories. This was not verified on an official page, so treat it as unclear.

Using music you have a license for

A creator or business with a direct license should keep proof of it and use the dispute flow in the restriction notification, which can route the dispute to the rights holder or to review. Meta's Rights Manager for rights holders has an allowlist type function, but its details were not verified.

Dr.DIO on Instagram and Facebook

Dr.DIO does not register its music in YouTube Content ID. The Creator plan ($9.99 a month) gives 100 tracks a month, a license number for YouTube and the Dr.DIO radio as a stream background; the Free plan gives 10 tracks a month with the credit line "Music: Dr.DIO · track title · drdio.studio".

If Meta restricts a video with Dr.DIO music, dispute it from the notification and give your license number as proof.
