Twitch music rules, DMCA notices and Soundtrack by Twitch

Twitch allows music in a channel only when the creator is sure they have the rights to use it. Unauthorized music can lead to DMCA takedowns and, with repeats, to account termination.

What music you can play on Twitch

Twitch's Community Guidelines treat playing another artist's copyrighted songs, including as background music in a broadcast, as an intellectual property violation.

Radio style broadcasts of recorded music with no live visual performance are restricted unless the creator has the rights and prior written authorization from Twitch. DJ sets with recorded music are allowed only in limited cases, such as the Twitch DJ Program with its catalogue, or recordings the creator owns or has cleared.

Karaoke and lip sync need music the creator owns or has permission to stream. Cover songs should be performed live, without others' recordings or instrumental tracks.

What happens with a DMCA notice

A rights holder sends a DMCA notice (URL, timestamps, work, claimant details) or a report through the Music Reporting Process. Twitch removes the content, often VODs or clips, and the channel can get a copyright strike. Repeat violations can lead to suspension or termination.

A counter notification is available if you believe the removal was a mistake. Twitch has not published an automatic monetization option like Content ID, so the outcome is removal or penalties, not revenue sharing.

Copyright Audio Warnings are neither DMCA notices nor strikes. Strikes expire, with timing that depends on factors such as the issue date and the account's standing.

Soundtrack by Twitch

Soundtrack by Twitch, a rights cleared music tool introduced in 2020, has been discontinued. Its API endpoints were reported withdrawn as of 17 July 2023, and third party reports say Twitch cited limited use and pointed creators to other rights cleared libraries.

Using music you have a license for

Twitch has no allowlisting like YouTube's. Keep the license or proof of ownership; if a DMCA notice arrives, file a counter notification or ask the rights holder to retract it.

Libraries that explicitly license Twitch streaming, and VODs and clips if you need them, lower the risk. Twitch's 2020 list of such libraries may be out of date.

The current Music Guidelines and DMCA FAQ pages could not be read in full for this guide; the points above come from official page snippets, so check them on the live pages. Exact strike counts and VOD muting were not confirmed.

Dr.DIO on Twitch

Dr.DIO does not register its music in YouTube Content ID. The Creator plan ($9.99 a month) gives 100 tracks a month, a license number for YouTube and the Dr.DIO radio as a stream background; the Free plan gives 10 tracks a month with the credit line "Music: Dr.DIO · track title · drdio.studio".

On Twitch the protection is your license: keep the Dr.DIO license number, and use it in a counter notification if a notice ever names Dr.DIO music.
