The story
It opens low, almost underwater. A detuned sub drone sits beneath everything, pulsing like something breathing at the bottom of a canal. Cello enters first, bowed slow and close, its grain doubled by a string-machine pad that widens the stereo field until the room feels tall and airless. No drums yet, just pressure.
Around the first minute the duduk arrives from a distance, thin and reedy, carrying the main theme in a register that feels half-remembered. Harpsichord answers underneath in short arpeggiated runs, cascading and slightly detuned, giving the section a baroque skeleton wrapped in modern sub-bass weight. The chopped_screwed treatment drags certain phrases behind the beat, smearing transients into a slow, syrupy pull.
Midway through, minimal percussion enters — soft-attack toms gated to a heartbeat pulse, no clicks, no snap, just low thuds that sit under the pad crescendes rather than driving them. The duduk theme returns an octave up, brass-like now, trading lead with the cello as the arpeggio backbone thickens. Reverb tails stack until the mix feels flooded, mirror-still on top and turbulent underneath.
In the final stretch everything thins out again. The harpsichord runs fade, the duduk drops back to its original register, and the sub-bass drone is the last thing left, swelling once more before going quiet — like the canal closing over whatever just crossed it.
