When Melodial is the better choice

Melodial's Basic plan at $6.99 a month is cheaper than Dr.DIO Business. It has regional sites for many countries, its own player hardware and a license document per territory.

If price is the deciding factor, Melodial is hard to beat. It also has Curated and Custom options priced per project.

When Dr.DIO fits better

The two services are close in model: both own their music and neither is registered with ASCAP, BMI, SESAC or GMR. The choice comes down to the sound. Dr.DIO is 2,298 original tracks in downtempo, deep house, lounge, ambient, synthwave and nu disco, and you can hear it all on the free radio first.

Dr.DIO Business also includes everything in Creator, so the same subscription covers music for your own videos and live streams. No Dr.DIO track is registered with any collecting society, and the license for Dr.DIO music comes from the studio directly. In some countries a society may presume all music is in its repertoire (GEMA in Germany is one example), and the venue may need to show it plays only non managed music. Radio, TV or live music in the same venue still need their own licenses.

Questions

Is there an alternative to Melodial?

Dr.DIO Business works the same way, with its own music and a venue certificate, at $14.99 a month or $149 a year, with 14 days free.

How much does Melodial cost?

In the US Melodial Basic is $6.99 a month per license for one device or zone, and Plus is $13.99. Annual billing is advertised as two months free.

Can I get a music license without ASCAP or BMI?

Yes, if the music is not registered with them. Melodial and Dr.DIO both supply such music. Music from any other source still needs those licenses.

Do I get a license certificate?

Melodial provides a Music License Certificate. Dr.DIO Business provides a public playback license and certificate for the venue.

Does it work in Germany?

GEMA may presume all music is in its repertoire, so a venue may need to show it plays only non managed music. Keep the certificate at hand.
