When Moodby is the better choice

Moodby is priced low, in PLN, and its yearly plan works out at PLN 29.25 a zone a month. It has more than 350 curated playlists and a page title that mentions Sonos. For a budget venue that wants variety, it is a sensible choice.

It has an Enterprise offer for 10+ locations, while Dr.DIO is one zone per venue and sells to chains only by request.

When Dr.DIO fits better

Both services work on the same idea: the music is not managed by a collecting society, and the venue receives a certificate. Dr.DIO's difference is the music itself: 2,298 original tracks made by one studio, focused on downtempo, deep house, lounge, ambient and synthwave.

Business also includes your own station and hourly schedule, and the radio can be heard free before paying. No Dr.DIO track is registered with any collecting society, and the license for Dr.DIO music comes from the studio directly. In some countries a society may presume all music is in its repertoire (GEMA in Germany is one example), and the venue may need to show it plays only non managed music. Radio, TV or live music in the same venue still need their own licenses.

Questions

Is there an alternative to Moodby?

Dr.DIO Business also offers music without collecting society fees and a venue certificate, at $14.99 a month or $149 a year per venue, with 14 days free.

What does Moodby cost?

Moodby lists PLN 39 a zone a month, or PLN 29.25 a month on a yearly plan (PLN 351 a year). We did not find a USD price.

Where can I get royalty free music for a cafe?

Moodby and Dr.DIO both supply music not registered with collecting societies, with a certificate for the venue. Neither includes mainstream hits.

Can I avoid a PRS license with royalty free music?

PRS for Music and PPL license the repertoire they represent; music outside it is licensed by its owner, as Dr.DIO does. But any other music you play still needs licenses, and some societies presume all music is theirs, so keep your certificate.

Is music without license fees legal in Germany?

It can be, but GEMA may presume all music is in its repertoire, so a venue may need to show it plays only non managed music. Dr.DIO provides a certificate for this purpose.
